Interest Groups

Here is the list of our interest groups.  See our current programme for venue and contact details.

If you have a suggestion for a new interest group, or would like to set one up, please contact any committee member.

 

Classical Music

Performances of classical music are shown on DVD and cover works of a wide range of composers:
From Elgar to Sibelius and Beethoven to Chopin. Sessions last about an hour and a quarter.

Tuesdays at 2.30 p.m:  January 15th, February 12th, March 12th.    Carbis Bay

 

Cards & Board Games

Mondays at 1.30 p.m:  Weekly from 7th January through to Easter:  St. Ives Harbour Pool Club.  This group is in place of  Pétanque which will resume in the warmer months.

 

Computer Group - Self-Help 

This group is for members who are willing to share knowledge and learn from each other about the day to day use of laptops, Ipads, mobile phones, etc. As the heading says this is a self help group and not 'techy'.  Past meetings have shown we all have something to offer each other in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

History

The History Group started back in 2007. Over the last 10 years we have covered   a wide range of topics including the Trojan War, Alfred the Great,   American History , the French Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars and the Ottoman Empire. Our format is to base our studies on history programmes originally made for television but now available on DVD. From time to time we will pause the programme to discuss what we have seen and to delve a bit further.  The group meets in the afternoons on alternate Mondays, except for the summer months when we go into recess to enable us to enjoy the Cornwall weather!

Local Heritage Group

Wednesdays:   Fornightly:  This group will incorporate group meetings and discussion, and also outings to local heritage sights.  Time & venue to be announced at General Meetings or contact Margaret: 01736 795 032

 

Pétanque

Pétanque is a form of French Boules.   The Pétanque group plays on Monday afternoons at 1.00 p.m. (weather and tide permitting) at the far end of beautiful Porthmeor Beach near the West Beach Bakery.

Mondays at 1.00 p.m:  Porthmeor West.  St. Ives.   This group has been postponed until the warmer months.

 

Shakespeare

Every other Monday afternoon we spend a couple of hours together watching a DVD of one of Shakespeare's 38 plays.  Usually, this requires two meetings as the DVD lasts more than two hours (especially Hamlet - 4 hours his longest play).  After watching and eating our chocolate biscuits with a cup of tea or coffee we have the opportunity to talk about the play, or anything else, but our main priority is to watch the DVD and marvel at Shakespeare the playwright.

Table Tennis:  

We are competitive. but not too serious with the emphasis on fun and good sportsmanship.  Learners and improvers are always welcome.  Suitable footwear must be worn at all times.

Thursdays at 10.30 a.m - 12 noon:  Every week from January 10th through to April 18th.  The Island Centre, St. Ives

Tuesdays at 3.45 p.m. - 4.45 p.m. after the General Meetings  at The Island Centre, St. Ives.

 

Walks

Various walks, usually on Fridays,  will be arranged from time to time and will be announced at General Meetings
