The History Group started back in 2007. Over the last 10 years we have covered a wide range of topics including the Trojan War, Alfred the Great, American History , the French Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars and the Ottoman Empire. Our format is to base our studies on history programmes originally made for television but now available on DVD. From time to time we will pause the programme to discuss what we have seen and to delve a bit further. The group meets in the afternoons on alternate Mondays, except for the summer months when we go into recess to enable us to enjoy the Cornwall weather!

Please see the U3A Programme for dates. On a good month we may have an attendance of 15 readers. We select books to read from the Library stock of reading sets and then discuss them. Our current book is: Purple Hibiscus by Adiche
Here are some comments from our members:
"Diametrically opposed judgements, I love it, I hated it, introduces me to books that otherwise I would have missed. Some of the comments of our group would be worthy of publication in the Guardian Review selection." "It's a social event with an intellectual edge to it and it wakes me up. Good company, light and pleasant environment at a minimum cost." "Having recently moved to this area, I have found friends with similar interests by joining the readers' circle and thereby launched myself into the community and eased the worries of moving."
So please come and see us, we are a warm and friendly group, it is fine if you just want to enjoy listening to the discussion without participating.

Usually, this requires two meetings as the DVD lasts more than two hours (especially Hamlet - 4 hours his longest play). After watching and eating our chocolate biscuits with a cup of tea or coffee we have the opportunity to talk about the play, or anything else, but our main priority is to watch the DVD and marvel at Shakespeare the playwright.
